A camper van at the centre of the police probe was a cash purchase, the Sunday Mail can reveal.
The £110,000 Niesmann+ Bischoff vehicle sat outside the home of Nicola Sturgeon’s mother-in-law for two years.
It was bought from a dealer in Stafford, near Birmingham, and had never been insured.
A source said: “There was no loan or credit required for the sale, it was a cash purchase. Not many people are lucky enough to have £110,000 sitting in their bank account.”
Party insiders previously claimed that the motorhome was supposed to function as a campaign battle bus.
However senior figures have said they were unaware of its purchase.
SNP President Mike Russell, who led independence campaigning from a ramshackle horse box, has said he knew nothing of it.
He was given the job of heading up an ‘independence unit’ by Nicola Sturgeon in summer 2021 and promised a £600,000 budget.
