In 2004, while serving as a Liberal Democrat Councillor before joining the Labour Party, he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a 39-year-old woman.

Mohammad Sarwar, 44, a Liberal Democrat on Kirklees Council, was arrested by police investigating an incident in Victoria Road, Lockwood, on July 4 in which a 39-year-old woman was injured.

He was bailed until September 1, pending further inquiries, but when he answered his bail on Wednesday he was told he was being released from it and no further action would be taken.

Sarwar, of North Street, Lockwood, had been a councillor since May, 1999. He was elected to the Crosland Moor ward with a majority of 138 votes over the former Labour councillor, Graham Sykes.

Sarwar owns the AZ International Food Store in Victoria Road.

Another Labour Councillor Charged With Perverting the Course of Justice

Mohammad Sarwar, a Labour ward councillor for the Crosland Moor and Netherton ward on Kirklees Council, has appeared in Bradford and Keighley Magistrates' Court charged with lying to police. Sarwar retired in March after 24 years in office, after being caught allegedly trying to deceive police to avoid a speeding offence.

The former Councillor was charged with conspiring together with relative Naeem Sarwar to commit 'a series of acts' on June the 20th, of last year. These acts include providing false details and documentation to police regarding a speeding offence.

The 63-year-old appeared alongside Naeem Sarwar, 21, in court on Monday. Neither men indicated a plea and were released under unconditional bail. They were released to next appear at Bradford Crown Court on Tuesday, October 4.
