The Labour Leader of Hull City Council, Colin Inglis, was abandoned by the Labour Party when he was charged with improper behaviour with a 13 year old boy who was in his care at a care home where he worked. Inglis was a York University graduate, took a job as a 'House Parent' at a Childrens Care Home allegedly to be near vulnerable children.

It was claimed Inglis would take boys from the care home for weekday breaks to 'Spring Cottages' which was a 'holiday type of home, and was actually under police survailence at the time.

Once there, it was claimed, he would perform sex acts on the 13 year old boy who was branded 'His Favourite'. One paedophile act he was accused of liking to do was stripping his victim naked, stripping himself naked, then he would put his victim into the shower with himself and wash the child down.

It was also alleged Inglis also took the child on camping trips by himself, with no other people invited. On one occasion he told the boy he was taking him to Rhyll to the fair ground that was there, but after the child agreed, Inglis took the child to a remote camping spot instead, where he sexually abused the boy.

Outcome:

The former Hull City Council leader, Colin Inglis, was cleared of the series of child abuse charges. A jury at Leeds Crown Court found Inglis not guilty on five allegations of indecent assault, dating back to the 1980s. Inglis, 49 at the time, was cleared of a sixth charge involving the same complainant.

Originally, he faced 14 counts of indecent assault against a teenage boy at a Hull children's home between April 1982 and August 1983, but he was found not guilty of eight charges earlier in the trial on the orders of the judge.

Inglis had worked at the Spring Cottage Children's Home as a social worker during the 1980s, where the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stayed. The court was told that his relationship with the boy had also been investigated by the police in 1997, but no charges were brought. Labour councillor Inglis, who was also a former Chairman of Humberside Police Authority, elected not to give evidence himself during the two-week trial, and had always denied the allegations.
