A former Leader of Derby City Council has been jailed for five years for child sex offences. At Derby Crown Court on Thursday, Maurice Burgess, 63, from Porter Road in Normanton, admitted 11 counts of indecently assaulting a boy under 14.

A conviction in 2006 for assaulting a seven-year-old and the revelation he had a conviction from 1971 led to calls for better checks on councillors.

The latest offences date to the late 1980's and early 1990s.

Burgess became leader after Labour lost overall control of the city council and his group formed a coalition with the Conservatives. He was suspended by the Liberal Democrats in 2005 but continued as an independent until May 2006.

Outcome:

Burgess was jailed for five years for child sex offences, and was given a suspended sentence for the 2006 conviction and fined for the 1971 offence.

Under the Local Government Act 1972, candidates at an election do not have to disclose convictions that occurred more than five years previously.

The Liberal Democrats in Derby have now toughened their procedures for selecting candidates.

Current party leader Councillor Hilary Jones said people wishing to stand for the party were required to disclose all previous misdemeanours.

Andrayas Khan denies he took the cash from disgraced Maurice Burgess.

A 63-year-old man has appeared in court charged with defrauding a disgraced former Leader of Derby City Council of almost £50,000. Khan denied 14 counts of fraud against Maurice Burgess when he appeared at Derby Crown Court on Thursday.

It is alleged that he applied for a number of credit cards in Mr Burgess's name after being entrusted with his finances when the politician was jailed for five years for sex offences against an underage boy in August 2011. It also alleged that he applied for a bank account in the name of the now 70-year-old, transferred money from an ISA and applied for a £10,000 loan pretending to be Mr Burgess.

Khan, of Kenmore Walk, in Wibsey, Bradford, pleaded not guilty to all 14 counts of fraud that were put to him.

Judge Jonathan Bennett, speaking to the court, said "The crown (prosecution) say this case involves the complainant going into custody and asking the defendant to look after his financial affairs while he is in custody.

"During this period he is alleged to have opened a number of accounts, applied for bank cards and transfer balances across."

"How much in total are we talking about?

Prosecutors replied this was a figure of around £48,000.

Khan was handed unconditional bail by Judge Bennett and his trial is scheduled to begin on December 10.

Mr Burgess was Liberal Democrat leader of Derby City Council from 2003 until July 2005.

He became leader after Labour lost overall control of the city council and his group formed a coalition with the Conservatives.

In August 2011, he was jailed for five years after pleading guilty to indecently assaulting boys aged under 14 in the 1980s and 1990s.

The offences came to light after one of Mr Burgess' victims phoned asking him to admit that he had abused him almost 20 years ago.

Mr Burgess, then 63 and of Porter Road, Normanton, initially denied the offences but then confessed to a police officer who was part of his church congregation.

He then confessed to the police there had been three other victims, who confirmed the offences when officers contacted them.
